The Castellers of London brought culture and community to life at The Blue Market in Bermondsey! They were thrilled to return and showcase the breathtaking art of building human towers, or Castells. Visitors also had the chance to enjoy a taste of Catalonia with Calçots served alongside romesco sauce. The Catalan Castells (or human towers) date back more than 200 years, and the Castellers of London had been performing and promoting this tradition in London since 2015. They had set up their training site in Bermondsey and once again celebrated Calçotada in The Blue Market Place, Bermondsey – a festive feast of Calçots and romesco sauce. Calçots, a vegetable similar to leeks or green onions, were barbecued and served with a creamy, nutty dipping sauce. Catalan families traveled from across the UK to enjoy traditional Catalan performances and food right in the heart of London.
This year, Catalonia held the distinction of being the World Region of Gastronomy, making the celebration even more special. Attendees had the opportunity to taste this unique cuisine, learn about Castells, and even take part in a human tower during a free workshop led by the skilled Castellers.
It was an unforgettable experience of Catalan culture right on our doorstep. While there, visitors also had the chance to shop, eat, drink, and enjoy time with family and friends at The Blue – a cherished traditional South London marketplace.
