Local History & Photo Archive

Bermondsey has always been a place of stories. From its riverside wharves and factories to its vibrant markets and proud communities, every street and building carries a piece of history. Now, we’re bringing those stories together in one place.

We’re excited to announce the launch of a brand-new History page on the Bermondsey website: a space dedicated to exploring the people, places, and events that have shaped our area over the centuries.

What You’ll Find

The page will feature regular posts that uncover Bermondsey’s layered past, including:

  • Local landmarks – from historic warehouses and churches to iconic housing estates.
  • Community stories – celebrating the generations who lived, worked, and built their lives here.
  • Markets & industry – tracing Bermondsey’s role as London’s “Larder,” famous for food production, leather, and trade.
  • Moments in time – spotlighting key events, from wartime resilience to waves of change and renewal.

Why It Matters

Bermondsey’s history isn’t just about dates and buildings, it’s about identity. By sharing these stories, we aim to strengthen the connection between past and present, and to highlight how history continues to shape the future of our neighbourhood.

Get Involved

We’d love for the community to be part of this project. If you have photographs, memories, or stories connected to Bermondsey’s past, keep an eye out for calls to contribute, your history could become part of the archive.

Final thought:
Bermondsey is more than just a place on the map. It’s a living history, woven from the lives of the people who call it home. This new page is our way of honouring that legacy – and making sure these stories are never forgotten.
