Little Builders, Big Ideas: Bermondsey

What if a shipping container could become a miniature construction site?

What if children could operate excavators, dump trucks and loaders, reshape landscapes, solve engineering challenges and discover how the world around them is built?

What if local residents helped create the miniature world inside it?

And what if it became a place for conversations about Bermondsey’s future, local development and the people who shape our neighbourhood?

That’s the thinking behind Little Builders, Big Ideas.

Possibly the best way to describe it is a moveable version of https://rccities.com/ in Dubai or https://www.diggers.cafe/ in Scarborough.

More Than Just a Digger Experience

A 20ft shipping container transformed into a miniature construction site, complete with realistic radio-controlled machinery, earthworks, roads, bridges and building projects.

Children (and adults) can take control of excavators, dump trucks and other construction vehicles, moving materials, completing challenges and learning how construction projects come together.

But the idea goes much further than entertainment.

We want to create an experience that celebrates the people who build our homes, schools, parks, railways, bridges and neighbourhoods.

The engineers.

The architects.

The builders.

The surveyors.

The designers.

The makers.

The problem-solvers.

The people who turn ideas into reality.

Inspiring Future Builders

Many children can tell you what an influencer does.

Far fewer could explain what a civil engineer does.

Yet every street, building, railway station and playground began as an idea before being brought to life by people with practical skills, creativity and determination.

Construction is one of the UK’s largest industries, yet many employers continue to face significant skills shortages.

Little Builders, Big Ideas is designed to help make those careers visible, tangible and exciting.

Because sometimes the best way to inspire somebody is simply to let them have a go.

A child who spends twenty minutes operating a miniature excavator today could become tomorrow’s engineer, project manager, architect, landscape designer or construction entrepreneur.

Built By The Community

One of the most exciting aspects of the project is that the container itself could become a community-built piece of Bermondsey.

Rather than purchasing a ready-made set, we would love to explore opportunities to build the miniature world inside it with local people.

We’re particularly interested in working with organisations such as London Bubble via their “The Shed” initiative, whose work brings older residents together through creativity, skills and shared experiences.

Imagine local residents helping to create:

  • Miniature industrial structures and landmarks
  • Streets and bridges
  • Parks and public spaces
  • Construction sites inspired by real local projects
  • Tiny versions of Bermondsey landmarks

The result would be something uniquely local.

Not something imported from elsewhere.

Something built by Bermondsey, for Bermondsey.

A Place For Conversations About Change

Bermondsey is constantly evolving.

New homes are being built.

Public spaces are being improved.

Businesses come and go.

New developments appear while older buildings find new uses.

Those conversations can often feel abstract and difficult to engage with.

A miniature construction site offers a surprisingly useful way of making those discussions more accessible.

The container could be used to showcase local projects, explain how developments take shape and encourage conversations about the future of the area in a hands-on, family-friendly environment.

Planning and development become easier to understand when you can see things being built, even at miniature scale.

Celebrating Bermondsey’s Building Heritage

Bermondsey has always been a place that makes things.

The docks.

The warehouses.

The railways.

The food producers.

The manufacturers.

The engineers.

The makers.

The area’s industrial buildings and infrastructure are monuments to generations of engineering, craftsmanship and construction.

Little Builders, Big Ideas feels like a natural extension of that story.

A project that celebrates both Bermondsey’s industrial heritage and the people who will shape its future.

A Practical Approach

Like any new idea, Little Builders, Big Ideas would need to prove itself.

We’re currently exploring whether local developers, construction companies and industry partners might be interested in supporting the project as part of their community engagement, education and skills programmes.

The initiative would create a visible, family-friendly destination that encourages positive conversations about construction, engineering and the future of our neighbourhoods.

Many organisations already invest significant resources into education, careers outreach and community engagement. This project offers a highly visible and accessible way of doing exactly that.

Designed To Travel

One of the advantages of building the experience within a standard shipping container is that it can move.

If successful, Little Builders, Big Ideas wouldn’t need to stay in a single location forever.

It could visit…

Festivals.

Town centres.

Business parks.

Construction industry events.

Community celebrations.

Other Business Improvement Districts.

Rather than being a one-off installation, it could become a travelling attraction that promotes engineering, construction and creativity while generating income that helps support future community projects here in Bermondsey.

A child in Bermondsey today could be sharing the same experience as a child in Birmingham, Bristol or Manchester next year.

Building An Asset

One reason the concept appeals to us is that it isn’t simply a temporary event.

At the end of the process, there is still something tangible.

The shipping container.

The glazing / The lighting / The miniature construction site / The vehicles / The educational content etc

In other words, we’re not just spending money on a day out. We’re creating an asset.

If the concept proves successful, it can continue generating value through school visits, sponsorship, ticket sales, corporate events and rental opportunities.

And if it doesn’t work?

The area would still own a converted shipping container and a collection of equipment and infrastructure that retain value.

Much of the investment remains tied to physical assets that can be reused, repurposed or sold.

That makes it a relatively low-risk way to explore an ambitious idea.

Why now

With a fresh administration now leading the council, it seems worthwhile to open the discussion and see whether there is appetite to explore the concept further.

Why We’re Exploring It

At its heart, Little Builders, Big Ideas is about curiosity.

It’s about helping children understand how the world around them is made.

It’s about bringing generations together to create something unique.

It’s about celebrating Bermondsey’s history while inspiring future careers.

It’s about creating a destination that is educational, engaging and fun.

Most importantly, it’s about reminding people that every building, bridge, railway, playground and neighbourhood began with an idea.

And somebody willing to build it.

Would you like to see Little Builders, Big Ideas come to Bermondsey?

We’d love to hear from residents, schools, community groups, developers, construction professionals and organisations who might be interested in helping shape the project or support a future funding application.
