Once a year, SE16 comes together in one park, for one day, for the same reason: to have a proper knees-up. Bermondsey Carnival returns to Southwark Park on Monday 31 August 2026 — the August Bank Holiday Monday — with two stages of music, a funfair, kids’ entertainment, free football, independent food traders and community stalls, and free admission to this event.
It’s a day built for everyone, from grandkids to grandparents, longtime locals to newer faces — the kind of event where you can watch a football skills session, grab food from an independent trader, and dance to a DJ set within the same hour.
A carnival with more than a century of history
Bermondsey Carnival isn’t a new addition to the local calendar — it’s Southwark’s oldest carnival, with roots going back to 1900. Over the following decades it grew into the highlight of Bermondsey’s community calendar, complete with parades, floats and local school displays touring the streets before finishing up in Southwark Park.
More recently, the carnival has been carried forward in memory of Russell Dryden — a much-loved Bermondsey market trader and music enthusiast who championed the event for years before his passing. Today’s organising team took up the mantle to make sure the carnival, and Russell’s legacy, continues for the community he cared about so deeply.
What’s on this year
From the moment the gates open at 1pm to the last set at 9pm, there’s always something happening somewhere in the park. Highlights for 2026 include:
- Two stages of live music and DJs — the main stage and the BSC x PEEK Tent, covering a genre spread you wouldn’t normally hear back to back, from ska to UK garage to underground dance music.
- A headline set from Artful Dodger, alongside Lisa Loud, Meaka Monroe, Ten Tonne Ska, Carpet Head and The Ukullective on the main stage.
- The BSC x PEEK Tent running DJ sets well into the evening, with Rafe, Ted White, Luckless, Sow, Abby T and Sound Source Radio DJs — Bermondsey’s own community radio station.
- Philip Poleon on compère duties — a performer whose career has taken him from touring with reggae greats to an appearance on Later with Jools Holland — alongside DJ Noel keeping the crowd moving between acts.
- A funfair with rides
- Dedicated children’s entertainment from the moment the park opens.
- Free football activities with Millwall Community Trust — no booking required, just turn up and get involved.
- Independent food and drink traders spread across the park, alongside local community stalls and businesses.
- A short acoustic set and talk from Rob Hisse on the importance of men talking about mental health — a moment worth sticking around for.

Where is it?
Southwark Park, SE16. The carnival entrance is on Lower Road, at the top right of the park, near the roundabout by the Rotherhithe Tunnel.
When is it?
Monday 31 August 2026 — the August Bank Holiday Monday.
Gates open at 1pm, and the carnival runs through to 9pm.
How much does it cost?
Nothing — entry is completely free, and there’s no ticket to show at the gate. Organisers do ask that visitors RSVP via the free entry link on the carnival website beforehand, purely to help them plan for numbers on the day.
Market stalls, community groups and food and drinks.
Food, drink and market stalls are all pay-as-you-go with the independent traders on site. Alcohol is available to buy from licensed vendors in the park, but can’t be brought in from outside.
How to get there
Public transport is strongly recommended — parking near the park is extremely limited on the Bank Holiday, and the surrounding streets get busy.
- Tube/Overground: Canada Water (Jubilee line and London Overground) is roughly a 15-minute walk south to the Lower Road entrance. Surrey Quays (London Overground) is closer — about 10 minutes north along Surrey Quays Road onto Lower Road.
- Bus: The 47, 188, 381, P12 and C10 all stop on Jamaica Road , within metres of the entrance — check TfL’s journey planner on the day for live updates.
- Bike: Santander Cycles docking stations are available near the entrance and nearby locations.
- On foot: Coming from Bermondsey, head down Jamaica Road onto Lower Road. From Deptford or New Cross, Surrey Quays Overground is the easiest way in.
A few practical things to know before you go
- Under-16s must be accompanied by an adult aged 21 or over, who’ll need to bring photo ID. Under-13s should wear a guardian wristband with a responsible adult’s contact details.
- The site sits within a controlled perimeter, so expect a security search on entry.
- No alcohol, glass, BBQs, sharp objects, drones or controlled substances brought from outside. Dogs on leads are welcome, and bikes, scooters and skateboards are fine if ridden responsibly.
- There’s a free water refill point on site — bring your own bottle (no glass).
- Accessible toilets and a viewing platform for the main stage are provided.

Bermondsey Carnival is organised by Bermondsey Carnival CIC, with support from Southwark Council, Blue Bermondsey BID, local charities and a long list of local businesses who back the event year after year to keep it free and open to everyone. It’s a rare thing in London these days — a genuinely free, all-ages, all-day event, run for the community it’s named after.
