Meet Small Beer, the original mid-strength brewers. Founded in 2017 by James Grundy and Felix James, they built the world’s first brewery dedicated to brewing beer below 2.8% ABV. Their focus is on delivering full-flavoured beer at mid-strength strength, allowing people to enjoy a great beer without it affecting the next day.
James and Felix started Small Beer because they couldn’t find a beer that fit their lifestyles or a beer that was brewed to meet the demands of modern life. As parents, professionals, and beer lovers, they wanted something they could enjoy mid-week without it being too strong. Felix, with his background in brewing, and James, with experience in spirits, saw an opportunity to revive the lost tradition of ‘small beer’ enjoyed in the days of Shakespeare. They designed a bespoke brewing kit that prioritises flavour maximisation while keeping the ABV low, and they’ve been brewing award-winning beer this way ever since.
Sustainability has been part of Small Beer from the beginning. We are London’s first and only B Corp brewery, meaning as a brand we meet the highest standards for social and environmental responsibility.
* We have saved over 8 million litres of water through our dry floor brewing process.
* Our brewery runs on 100% renewable energy.
* All our packaging is recycled or recyclable.
* Our spent grain is used to feed livestock on local farms.
We believe beer can and should be brewed with care—for both quality and impact.
As a brand we are proud to be the original mid-strength brewers. Our focus on quality, flavour, and sustainability has allowed us to grow beyond the UK. We are now available on the East Coast of the US and served on British Airways short-haul flights out of Gatwick.
We have always set out to prove that great beer doesn’t need to be high in alcohol. Every decision we make, from our brewing process to our environmental commitments, is about maintaining that standard.
