SUMMARY:Susie Olczak\, To Tie You Over Exhibition
DESCRIPTION: To Tide You Over \, a solo presentation of new printmaking\, sculpture and moving image by Susie Olczak. Exploring how water connects and transforms landscapes through both natural and engineered systems\, the exhibition traces its movement across hidden and visible networks–from root systems and moisture bearing soils that quietly draw and redistribute moisture to infrastructures that manage flow and circulation. \nOlczak’s research connects Chile’s Atacama Desert with London’s waterways\, revealing how distant sites become linked through circulation and exchange. The nearby Brunel Tunnel – a pioneering Victorian underwater passage that became as much spectacle as infrastructure – exemplifies water’s dual role in shaping both practical necessity and cultural imagination\, a tension that runs throughout the exhibition. \nIn the main gallery\, Olczak’s ceramic sculptures embody the physicality of their engineering\, scratched and moulded into objects that speak to potential function as much as materiality and aesthetics. The works point to the contingent\, improvisational processes the artist uses to investigate spatial environments. Meanwhile\, moving image work in the Shed space splices together fragments of terrain\, water and light to meditative effect. \nIn proximity to the Thames\, To Tide You Over\, takes the river’s tidal rhythm as both subject and structure\, considering how adaptation offers ways of understanding shifting landscapes – where water is both sustaining and increasingly unpredictable. \nSusie Olczak is a multidisciplinary artist with a focus on sculpture. Okinawa Prefecture encompasses an archipelago of islands in Southern Japan that formed part of the historic Ryukyu Kingdom and as such has its own distinct music and traditions. \nFree registration on Eventbrite here  \n  \n \nLive Performance  \nA variety of performances showcasing Okinawan culture will feature throughout the day. From elegant Ryukyu Classical Music and energetic sanshin performances of Okinawan Folk Songs to traditional Eisa dance performances. There will be the chance to try Eisa dance through a workshop taught along with demonstrations of Ryukyu Karate\, a martial art originating from Okinawa. \nIn addition\, guest performers from the Japanese islands of Okinawa and Amami\, and Tokyo will be visiting the UK to showcase their unique island folk songs and dances. \n \nFood and Goods Stalls \nOkinawan cuisine\, food\, and crafts will be on sale from a variety of stalls run by the London Okinawa Sanshinkai and other independent retailers. \n \nArts & Crafts – Bermondsey Puppet & Storytelling Festival \nMake Okinawan Dugoug Puppets with artist Miyuki Kasanara. Bermondsey Puppet & Storytelling Festival is offering free puppetry and storytelling workshops across local schools\, community venues and public spaces. You can find free activities in and around The Blue Market Place every Saturday May – July\, leading to a lively outdoor celebration in Bermondsey Spa Gardens on Sunday 12 July\, 12–5pm. Bermondsey Puppet & Storytelling Festival is supported by Blue Bermondsey BID\, Connection With Wonder and Southwark Cultural Celebration Fund\, \n \nLondon Okinawa Sanshinkai\nLondon Okinawa Sanshinkai was formed in 1999 at SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies) by academics specialising in Ryukyu Classical Music and Yaeyama Folk Songs studies. Since then\, the group has been disseminating Okinawan music\, dances and culture through a variety of activities and performances not only in the UK but also in other European countries. At the centre of these activities is our annual “Okinawa Day” event. \n \nA history of “Okinawa Day” in the UK\nThere have been many events in London over the years introducing traditional Okinawan music and dance to the UK. Notably\, the Rinken Band’s performance in Hyde Park\, Sonoda Eisa’s performance at the Thames Festival\, and recitals by Shinji Kise (Master of the Nomura School of Ryukyu Classical Music). \nIn June 2009\, London Okinawa Sanshinkai and Okinawa Kenjinkai (The UK Okinawan Association) organised an event called “Okinawa Matsuri” at Café Oto in Northeast London. In Okinawa\, a public holiday called Memorial Day is observed annually on the 23rd of June\, and to coincide with this\, we have been holding our London Okinawa Day event on the third Saturday of June ever since. \nSince 2010\, the event has been held under its new name “Okinawa Day”. \nMoving its location to Spitalfields in East London\, it has successfully run for 10 years\, growing to the point of attracting an audience of around thousands of visitors each year. \nAfter a hiatus due to the pandemic\, Okinawa Day restarted in 2022 in a new location; The Blue Market in Bermondsey\, South London. The Blue Market\, built with a unique architectural style focusing on sustainability and community was a perfect fit for our growing event. The Blue Market’s central philosophy of embracing the diversity of people and culture matches our own and we hope to attract even more people\, from all backgrounds\, to enjoy this year’s Okinawa Day and celebrate music from across the world. \n \nBlue Bermondsey BID\nThis event continues Blue Bermondsey BID’s on-going programme of events and workshops to promote co-creation and wellbeing though creativity\, music\, physical activity\, inspiration learning and awareness of the local environment. Events such as Okinawa day bring diverse communities together to participate and mix and encouraging footfall to local businesses and amenities including The Blue Market\, Big Local Works and Blue Anchor Library.  Visitors enjoy different kinds of participatory activities at each event exploring a wide range of interests with art and crafts\, music\, storytelling\, games\, and environmental activities\, with everyone welcome to join in and participate\, especially local families.  Our target audience is people of all ages\, colours and genders who live in the locality\, especially families with school age children. We believe that having held many successful events on the site over the past 14 years\, we have built up a solid understanding of the safe management and delivery of events in this location.

Put the date in your diary! \nhttps://bermondsey.london/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/PXL_20260423_075717247.mp4\n  \nAbout the Dugoug Puppet workshop\nUsing paper cups\, paper cards\, paper straws and tape to create the structure of the Dugong puppet. Inspired by the Okinawan traditional dye Bingata\, we can decorate the puppet with colour pens. Bingata is born in Okinawa 14 century\, typically features nature motifs of native fauna and flora in numbers of bright colours. Images of the puppet below are also for publicity.) \nDugong (one species) and Manatee (three species) are the only surviving members of the order Sirenia aka sea cows\, a close relative of the elephant. In Okinawa\, the dugong is called Zan and it has long been revered as a spiritual symbol\, a messenger of the gods and a model for mermaids\, a mystical being that connects the sea and humanity. In the Yaeyama region\, it has been part of the food culture for over 3500 years\, and there is a history of reverence for it as a sacred creature\, with folktales of dugongs marrying fishermen and stories of them saving people from tsunamis. \nDugongs (Dugong dugon) are considered excellent\, high-level indicators of marine ecosystem health\, specifically for coastal seagrass habitats. Because they rely entirely on seagrass for survival\, their presence\, population density\, and physical condition directly reflects the health of their environment. Dugongs act as “underwater gardeners.” By grazing\, they stimulate the growth of younger\, more nutritious seagrass\, which helps maintain productive seagrass meadows. However\, currently the dugong is close to extinction globally due to habitat loss. The IUCN lists the dugong as a species vulnerable to extinction. In Okinawa\, an endangered species\, they haven’t been sighted lately but its faeces and traces have been reported around the Islands\, suggesting they may still be inhabiting the waters around Okinawa. \n \nMiyuki Kasahara\nMiyuki Kasahara is a Japanese artist based in London. Miyuki has worked extensively with communities and schools as an artist-educator\, including projects with Bow Arts. Miyuki’s practice weaves her international heritage with contemporary concerns about ecology and social change to create drawing\, film\, installation\, sculpture\, and interactive performance. Miyuki Kasahara runs workshops for Okinawa Day each year in the Blue Market Place\, sharing traditional Japanese arts and crafts techniques with families. \n \nOkinawa Day\nAn annual family-friendly celebration showcasing music\, dance\, food\, and crafts from the Ryukyu Islands of southern Japan. Okinawa has a rich and distinct cultural heritage\, shaped by its history as the Ryukyu Kingdom. \nEnjoy Ryukyu classical music\, Okinawan folk songs\, Eisa dance\, Ryukyu karate demonstrations\, and traditional Okinawan cuisine. DESCRIPTION:Families can make a puppet for Bermondsey Puppet & Storytelling Festival with Artist Joanna McCormick at Potters Fields Mid-Summer Party! \nPotters Fields Park Management Trust is celebrating its 21st Anniversary year! The Potters Fields Fair takes place on Saturday June 20th\, from 12 noon until 8p.m. and will offer a day of fun and entertainment for local residents and visitors of all ages. \nThere will be a full stage programme of music\, from traditional foot-tapping New Orleans jazz;  Jamaican-influenced R’n’B\, ska\, dub rock and reggae\, and ending with two sets of ‘surf noir’. \nBetween musical acts\, visitors can enjoy a display of traditional Catalan castell (human pyramid-building) from the Castellers of London\, a dance performance from Southwark College students and Fur The Love of Dogs – an entertaining dog show organised by Bermondsey-based Hiver Arches. \nFamilies can join our free drop in puppet workshop with local artist Jo McCormick. Make a simple stick puppet to take home. DESCRIPTION:Bermondsey Carnival is a free\, day-long community celebration held in Southwark Park\, with a history stretching back over a hundred years in SE16. The event brings together two stages of live music and DJs spanning a wide mix of genres\, a funfair\, dedicated kids’ entertainment\, free football activities run by Millwall Community Trust\, independent food and drink traders\, and local community stalls. \nMusic runs across two areas: the main stage and the BSC x PEEK Tent\, which brings an “underground” dance-music flavour to the afternoon with DJ sets running well into the evening. The 2026 line-up includes Lisa Loud\, Meaka Monroe\, Ten Tonne Ska\, Carpet Head\, The Ukullective\, and headliner Artful Dodger\, plus compère Philip Poleon and DJ Noel\, alongside sets from Rafe\, Ted White\, Luckless\, Sow\, Abby T and Sound Source Radio DJs in the BSC x PEEK Tent. \nThe event is organised by Bermondsey Carnival CIC with support from Southwark Council\, local charities and businesses. \nWhere is it?\nSouthwark Park\, SE16. The carnival entrance is on Lower Road\, by the Rotherhithe Tunnel roundabout (top right of the park). \nWhen is it?\nMonday 31 August 2026 — the August Bank Holiday Monday.\nGates open at 1pm and the event runs until 9pm. \nCheck the Bermondsey Carnival social media pages for updates. \nHow much does it cost?\nEntry is completely free. No ticket is needed to get in\, though organisers ask visitors to RSVP via the free entry link in advance\, as it helps them estimate attendance numbers. \nHow to get there\nOrganisers strongly recommend public transport\, as parking nearby is extremely limited on Bank Holiday Monday. \n\nTube/Overground: Canada Water (Jubilee line and London Overground) is around a 15-minute walk south to the Lower Road entrance. Surrey Quays (London Overground) is closer\, about a 10-minute walk north along Surrey Quays Road onto Lower Road.\nBus: The 1\, 188 and C10 all stop on Lower Road within a short walk of the entrance — check TfL’s journey planner on the day for live updates.\nBike: Santander Cycles docking stations are available at Canada Water and along Lower Road. Note that Lime bikes cannot be parked directly outside the gates.\nOn foot: From Bermondsey\, head down Jamaica Road onto Lower Road.
