SUMMARY:Bermondsey Okinawa Day Puppet Workshop 2026
DESCRIPTION:Make Dugoug Puppets with artist Miyuki Kasahara and enjoy live music\, performance\, food and unique culture from Okinawa\, the southernmost islands of Japan. All ages welcome. \nReserve a spot \nThe puppets made at this event will be used at at our  grand finale celebration in Bermondsey Spa Gardens on 12th July.. Put the date in your diary! \nhttps://bermondsey.london/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/PXL_20260423_075717247.mp4\n  \nAbout the Dugoug Puppet workshop\nUsing paper cups\, paper cards\, paper straws and tape to create the structure of the Dugong puppet. Inspired by the Okinawan traditional dye Bingata\, we can decorate the puppet with colour pens. Bingata is born in Okinawa 14 century\, typically features nature motifs of native fauna and flora in numbers of bright colours. (Short video link of a sample puppet I made here\, this can be used for instagram you can add okinawa / Sansinkai music? Images of the puppet below are also for publicity.) \nDugong (one species) and Manatee (three species) are the only surviving members of the order Sirenia aka sea cows\, a close relative of the elephant. In Okinawa\, the dugong is called Zan and it has long been revered as a spiritual symbol\, a messenger of the gods and a model for mermaids\, a mystical being that connects the sea and humanity. In the Yaeyama region\, it has been part of the food culture for over 3500 years\, and there is a history of reverence for it as a sacred creature\, with folktales of dugongs marrying fishermen and stories of them saving people from tsunamis. \nDugongs (Dugong dugon) are considered excellent\, high-level indicators of marine ecosystem health\, specifically for coastal seagrass habitats. Because they rely entirely on seagrass for survival\, their presence\, population density\, and physical condition directly reflects the health of their environment. Dugongs act as “underwater gardeners.” By grazing\, they stimulate the growth of younger\, more nutritious seagrass\, which helps maintain productive seagrass meadows. However\, currently the dugong is close to extinction globally due to habitat loss. The IUCN lists the dugong as a species vulnerable to extinction. In Okinawa\, an endangered species\, they haven’t been sighted lately but its faeces and traces have been reported around the Islands\, suggesting they may still be inhabiting the waters around Okinawa. \n \nMiyuki Kasahara\nMiyuki Kasahara is a Japanese artist based in London. Miyuki has worked extensively with communities and schools as an artist-educator\, including projects with Bow Arts. Miyuki’s practice weaves her international heritage with contemporary concerns about ecology and social change to create drawing\, film\, installation\, sculpture\, and interactive performance. Miyuki Kasahara runs workshops for Okinawa Day each year in the Blue Market Place\, sharing traditional Japanese arts and crafts techniques with families. \n \nOkinawa Day\nAn annual family-friendly celebration showcasing music\, dance\, food\, and crafts from the Ryukyu Islands of southern Japan. Okinawa has a rich and distinct cultural heritage\, shaped by its history as the Ryukyu Kingdom. \nEnjoy Ryukyu classical music\, Okinawan folk songs\, Eisa dance\, Ryukyu karate demonstrations\, and traditional Okinawan cuisine. Food and crafts will be available from stalls run by the London Okinawa Sanshinkai. \nFind out more about Okinawa Day \n  \nBermondsey Puppet & Storytelling Festival 2026\nA new family-friendly community festival is coming to Bermondsey in summer 2026. Bermondsey Puppet & Storytelling Festival will feature free puppetry and storytelling workshops across local schools\, community venues and public spaces\, leading to a lively outdoor celebration in Bermondsey Spa Gardens on Sunday 12 July\, 12–5pm. \nThe finale will showcase community-made puppets alongside headline performances from internationally renowned storytellers including Usifu Jalloh\, Emily Hanna\, Marrianna Portello and Bernadette Russell. SUMMARY:Millwall Match Day Face painting / Arts and crafts / 2 May
DESCRIPTION:It’s great to see local businesses in Bermondsey coming together to support family-friendly initiatives that benefit the whole community. \nOn weekends with home fixtures\, we’ll be offering free face painting at The Blue Market. The designs don’t have to be football-themed — kids can choose anything they like. \n Where: The Blue Market Place\, Market Place\, Bermondsey\, London SE16 3UQ \n\nIn Bermondsey\, we’re lucky to have a strong network of local businesses who don’t just operate side by side\, but actively pitch in together to support the wider community. One of the clearest examples of this collaboration is what happens on Millwall matchdays. \nFootball brings energy and footfall to the area\, and we see that as an opportunity\, not just to welcome supporters\, but to create something extra for families and local residents too. By adding simple pop-up activities like face painting\, we help make matchdays feel welcoming and inclusive for everyone. \nIt’s all about collaboration. A single business might only be able to do a small thing\, but when we pool resources\, ideas\, and energy\, the result is something much bigger. Families feel welcome\, businesses see new faces\, and the area becomes a destination rather than just a route to the stadium. \nThis spirit of pitching in together is at the heart of Bermondsey’s identity. Matchdays are a reminder that when local businesses put community first\, everyone benefits; residents\, visitors\, and supporters alike.

SUMMARY:Millwall Match Day Face painting / Arts and crafts / 14 March

SUMMARY:Bermondsey Wassail 2026
DESCRIPTION:Wake the Trees: Bermondsey Wassail at The Blue Market Place 3pm\nThere is a particular kind of winter hush that settles over an orchard. \nBranches sketch themselves against a pale sky. The ground is cold enough to make your boots feel honest. The trees stand quietly\, doing the long work of waiting. \nAnd then\, once a year\, people arrive—with song\, laughter\, lanterns\, and a very old idea: that gratitude has a sound\, and community can be an offering. \nThat idea is wassailing. \nOn Saturday 28th February\, Bermondsey gathers once again at The Blue Market Place for a family-friendly afternoon of music\, making\, procession\, and shared joy\, before heading together to the Rouel Estate Community Orchard to wake the trees from their winter rest. \nWhat is a Wassail?\nIn its simplest form\, wassailing is a mid-winter ritual where people come together to thank fruit trees for what they have given\, to ward off bad luck\, and to encourage a healthy harvest in the year ahead. \nIt is part celebration\, part blessing\, part collective pep talk for a sleeping orchard. \nOr\, as Ranger Lesley Wertheimer beautifully puts it:“We’re about to wassail the trees\, which is a pagan ritual to say thank you… and to also ensure that the trees grow well and provide even more apples next year.” \nIn other words: we show up\, we make some joyful noise\, and we tell the trees—quite sincerely—“Keep going. We’re in this with you.” \nA Ritual with Muddy Boots and Big Intent\nWassailing has deep roots in British folk tradition\, particularly in cider-making regions\, but what makes Bermondsey’s Wassail special is how ancient and practical it feels at the same time. \nThe Rouel Estate Community Orchard is still young. It will be years before it produces apples in any meaningful quantity. In a culture trained to expect everything instantly\, that kind of waiting is radical. \nSo the wassail becomes a promise as much as a party. \nWe are not demanding fruit yet. We are saying: take your time—and when you do give\, do it well. \nIt is a ritual that honours patience\, and makes waiting feel active. \nWhat Will Happen on the Day\nThe Wassail is joyful\, welcoming\, and deliberately noisy. \nFrom 3pm\, join us at The Blue Market Place for: \n\nMusic and singing\nLantern- and crown-making\nWhistles\, drums\, pots\, wooden spoons—anything that makes a good racket\nSome very special guests 👀\n\nAt 4.30pm\, we assemble for a lantern-lit procession to the Rouel Estate Community Orchard\, where we’ll sing to the apple and pear trees\, toast them\, and officially wake them up for the year ahead. \nThere will be non-alcoholic fruit punch and mulled cider\, shared in the spirit of warmth and celebration. \nChildren are very welcome (with an accompanying adult)\, and costumes\, crowns\, and leafy flair are strongly encouraged. \nWhy Wassail Still Matters\nIt’s easy to think of wassailing as charming folklore—nice\, but optional. \nBut in a city\, orchards need more than soil and water. They need witnesses. They need stories. They need people who feel that the trees belong to them—not in an ownership sense\, but in a sense of care and responsibility. \nLocal fruit isn’t just nostalgic. It’s a practical response to climate change\, supply chains\, and food resilience. Wassail helps people care about trees before the fruit arrives. It turns stewardship into something social\, memorable\, and fun. \nYou don’t just take. You turn up.You thank. You sing. You commit. \nCome Sing the Orchard Into Being\nIn recent years\, around a hundred people have gathered to sing to these trees. That number is its own kind of magic. It says this orchard is not just a collection of saplings—it’s a shared project\, with a chorus. \nIf you come\, you might leave with cold cheeks and warm hands. You’ll almost certainly leave with the feeling that you’ve taken part in something both ancient and urgently modern: a local answer to a global problem\, sung into the branches of a young orchard still learning how to be an orchard. \nBecause the best time to care about a tree isn’t when it’s heavy with fruit. \nIt’s now—while it is still becoming.
