Jack’s Café: From Upstairs Lessons to successful Cafe in Bermondsey Market Place

Tucked into the heart of Bermondsey Market Place, Jack’s Café is a neighbourhood gem — it has a story full of hustle, heart, and one seriously well-kept chimichurri recipe.

“It was like a family project,” Jack says, leaning on the counter with a grin. “We first came down here for a food event — me and my dad. But I actually knew the place already… I was a student upstairs.”

Before he was serving up steak and chips to hungry locals, Jack was studying catering and food hygiene just above the market. With help from the London and Southwark Community Kitchen, he spent nearly a year learning the ropes. “Proper graft,” he says, “but I loved it.”

Then came the food trailer — a humble start with bold flavor.

“We ran it for about two years,” Jack recalls. “Steak and chips with chimichurri — an amazing sauce! Kept it simple, with a family recipe, but people loved it!”

That trailer became more than just a business — it was a crash course in what it takes to feed a crowd, build a loyal following, and keep the passion alive. So when a space opened up at Bermondsey Market Place, Jack and his family didn’t hesitate.

“This popped up, and we grabbed the opportunity. And now — here I am.”

But Jack’s quick to deflect the spotlight.

“I’m not really one for being on camera and taking all the limelight,” he says. “This café is a massive team effort, and the team you see in the photo are just as important to the success of this place.” (Special thanks to Mia, Nancy, and of course Stuart — Jack’s dad!)

Jack’s Café is more than a place to grab a bite. It’s a local success story built from community roots, family support, and good old-fashioned hard work. Whether you’re craving a hearty lunch or just want to meet the people behind your plate, this is exactly where you want to be.
