On a blustery December afternoon, the Bermondsey Winter Fair 2024 brought festive cheer to The Blue Market Place, even as Storm Darragh and it’s 70+mph reported gusts swept through with weather warnings and heavy winds. While the storm significantly impacted much of the day’s planned activity, the resilience and spirit of the local community still shone through. I can’t write that it was a raging success as that’d be a lie, but occasionally I think people understand we will be beaten by the British weather when doing outdoor events in winter (but we carried on with the spirit of the day!).

Originally scheduled from 12pm to 4pm, the event offered a mix of seasonal activities, including Christmas carols, street performers, wreath-making, party games, and festive market shopping. Though some outdoor activities had to be scaled back or cancelled due to safety concerns, as even the market stall holders decided not to trade on the day, many local residents braved the weather to enjoy the atmosphere and support local businesses.

This year’s fair was organised by Blue Bermondsey BID, with special contributions from Rouel Road TRA, Big Local Works, and ReLondon. One of the highlights was a free indoor Christmas Party for local residents, hosted in partnership with Rouel Road TRA, which offered a warm and welcoming escape from the stormy conditions. The launch of ‘Greening the Blue’, an environmental initiative by BIG Local Works, also went ahead indoors with engaging activities and useful resources for visitors of all ages.

Despite the weather, familiar favourites like the Custard Storm Circus, a roaming Father Christmas, and wreath-making with the Art Elves brought smiles to those who attended. Performances by choirs from St. James Church and Boutcher Primary School understandably didn’t take place, but the community spirit remained strong throughout the day.

While Storm Darragh tried to dampen the festivities, the Bermondsey Winter Fair 2024 was a testament to the dedication of local organisers and the warmth of the Bermondsey community.
Let’s see what the weather does next time!
